Central India’s largest national park, Kanha is famed for its varied landscape comprising thick forest cover, meadows and bamboo thickets. Numerous varieties of grass abound these meadows or open grasslands, providing abundant food for the herbivores.

Hey moms & dads!! Here’s a unique opportunity to bond with your child(ren)* – while you get to indulge in your passion for wildlife and photography!

Sudhir Shivaram Photography’s upcoming Parent-Kids Workshop is at one of the most scenic and beautiful tiger destinations in India – Kanha. Experience the winter sun’s rays filtering through the vibrant foliage as we wait for the mighty tiger to make an appearance.

Gift your children a novel experience this Christmas, one that takes them to the lap of nature as they soak up the sun, the sights and the sounds.

Watch lovingly, as they play games that incorporate lessons about our natural world. Beam proudly, as they show you their near-perfect clicks.

The perfect mix of travel, fun and learning – this is one trip you shouldn’t miss!

*The target age group for kids is 7 to 14 years. But do tell us if your little one or not-so-little one is on either side of this age bracket. If you strongly feel they should tag along, we would be happy to accommodate. For, after all, mom & dad know best!!

Your Tour Buddy: Swaroop Gokhale

Mom of 2 kids and a Post Graduate in Environmental Sciences from the University of Pune, Swaroop adores nature and travel. After completing her Masters, she worked with Bharati Vidyapeeth University as an Education Officer. Her job role involved extensive travel across Maharashtra and Goa, to spread nature conservation awareness in schools and other institutions.

Swaroop worked in the wildlife travel industry for 3 years before joining SSP. During her stint there, she has conducted tours to a wide range of destinations, Sunderbans being her all-time favourite. She has also lead environmental education workshops for kids of all ages to create awareness about nature and its denizens. As a part of these educational tours she has guided participants to write blogs, articles and poems about the places they visit.

“For in the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.”
– Baba Dioum

This thought moved us so much that we had to act on it. And we realised that the last line melded beautifully with our philosophy – “for the love of learning.” We then rethought our most popular photography tours and redesigned them to be kid-centric. These specially curated tours, in the lap of nature, are a great way to engage, enthuse and empower kids toward the conservation cause.

With a focus on experiential learning, we have planned the activities to ensure a mix of indoor-outdoor, theoretical-hands-on, group-individual exercises. Children will be encouraged to discover newer dimensions and facets to their abilities and personalities. The jungle will act as the perfect backdrop as they pick up the rudiments of photography, look up the right words for their blogs and along the way make new friends and merry memories.

These early experiences will stay with our children to make them more sensitive and responsible while sparking their interest in nature and wildlife conservation. The photography and blogging angle to these tours will further excite them and in the process, give them powerful tools for self-expression. And who knows, present a very attractive career option in the years to come!

    Chitvan Jungle Lodge

There are three stories about the origin of the name Chitvan.

The dense jungle there (before men started settlements there) was teeming with Cheetahs, and, the word for ‘jungle’ in Hindi is van. So, the people around started to call that locality as Cheetah-van, which was later modified as Chitvan.

The dense jungle in the past was teeming with spotted-deer, and so they started to call it Chitri-van which gave way to the present word for the district. Chitri meaning spotted.

As per Rigveda (an ancient Indian Scripture) life is divided into four stages, namely,

Brahamcharya (Until 25 years of age)
Grahistha (From 25 till 50 years of Life)
Vanaprastha (From 50 till 75 years of Life)
Sannyas ( 75 years of Life)

By the end of second stage the householder is said to finish all his family responsibilities. He enters the third stage, Vanaprastha (The Hermit in Retreat) and renounces all worldly pleasures, he goes to the Van (Forest), to tame the animal forces of mind, by staying with the animals. This prepares him for the fourth stage of life, where he renunciates practically all his wants and desires and is a wandering ascetic in this stage. Chitt is a product of Mind, Intellect and Ego, Van is Forest. So Chitvan is the forest which a man in his third stage of life visits to chanelize his Chitt (Mind, Intellect and Ego).

The idea behind Chitvan is to make it a retreat from Worldly Life, a Stage 3 retreat, where a person would free himself from all Illusions.
